January 28 - International Day of Personal Data Protection
2024-01-28 17:49:18It should be noted that starting from March 1, 2024, the new law of Georgia "On Personal Data Protection" comes into force, setting a new standard for personal information protection. Therefore, this year is particularly important for the supervisory body. The main part of the January 28 event was dedicated to the new law.
The event was opened by the President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili, who reviewed the implementation process of the new law and provided information to the public about the activities that the service has carried out after the adoption of the law by the Parliament, and which it continues actively. The President of the Personal Data Protection Service of Georgia also reviewed last year's achievements in terms of international cooperation, highlighting that in 2023, Georgia obtained the status of an observer of the activities of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).
During her speech, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili announced a new training course, which the Service is starting on January 31 for those interested in data processing issues. Each course is two days long, and the participants will receive both theoretical and practical information about the new law of Georgia “On Personal Data Protection”, citizens' rights, and other important issues.
Public Defender (Ombudsman) of Georgia, Levan Ioselian, and the Chairman of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament, Mikheil Sarjveladze, addressed the community gathered at the event.
In the second part of the event, Prof. Dr. Dr. Lela Janashvili presented to the audience the second issue of the Journal of Personal Data Protection Law and the new guide to personal data protection of minors. There was also a presentation of videos prepared by the Service for January 28 within the framework of the "Privacy is your right" campaign. In the videos, historian Giorgi Kalandia, doctor - Nugzar Uberi, psychologist Ramaz Sakvarelidze, project manager of the "META" social network Mariam Sharangia, and photographer and social entrepreneur Ana Goguadze talk about the importance of privacy of personal information. The videos will be published gradually on the official page of the service and on social media.
Approximately 50 guests attended the mentioned event, including members of parliament, public, private, academic, and non-governmental sector representatives.
